Ribbon art, intricately intertwined with charm
Taking the colors unique to Tohoku, we are making a leap forward.
In August 2023, Sendai PARCO celebrated its 15th anniversary since its opening. For the memorable anniversary, Non-san's special exhibition was designed to further excite Tohoku. The highlights of this time are new works that fusion her art and traditional Tohoku art crafts. Based on a design sketch that combines a ribbon and a Japanese pattern, which is an important motif for himself, the craftsmen breathed life and cut off a classical yet modern new ground.

——What are your impressions of collaboration with traditional crafts in Tohoku?
"Kokeshi doll Lighthouse" based on Tsugaru Kokeshi doll in Aomori Prefecture and "Akabeko" in Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Kokeshi doll Lighting has a ribbon pattern, but I was conscious that I could interact well with traditional Japanese patterns such as peony flowers, dragonflies, and daruma, which are often used in Tsugaru Kokeshi doll. By combining the ribbon and the Japanese taste, we aimed to achieve a true "integration". When I handed the design, I was told, "If you draw with the touch of a craftsman's brush, the motif like a ribbon will not become Western at all." I'm really looking forward to it until it comes out! The expression of Kokeshi doll was left to the craftsmen other than the request to make it different, so I think it is also a point where you can feel coexistence with tradition.

It shows a variety of expressions depending on how you catch it
Possibility of Ribbon Materials
——What does a ribbon exist for you?
The ribbon is a very important motif. There are images such as symbols of cute things and ornaments, but when viewed as art, it looks like creatures and emotion emerges. If you express dark things with cute ribbons, you will have a unique taste. It is interesting that the expression changes depending on the fabric, such as satin, lace, organdy, etc., and I like the fact that it seems to be inconsistent and familiar.

——Has there been any change in the way you perceive ribbons in yourself?
Basically, it doesn't change. It is interesting that the symbols of cute things appear to be pleasant, dark, or cute, and become complex expressions. Ribbon art is not only cute, but also because various charms overlap, the way of receiving it spreads infinitely, so I like it very much. However, this time, by collaborating with traditional crafts, I realized that "Ribbon goes well with the charm of Japanese", so I think that it has been added a new range.

What I want to pursue is a sense of instinct.
The strength and danger that both extreme charms coexist is beautiful
——Where do you get creative inspiration from?
I value emotions that I think I like, tickle my five senses, and my skin sensation moves. Skin sensation is important in acting as well.……When examined on the Internet, there is an explanation that is too detailed (laughs) that "the sensations that are accepted and perceived by receptive cells present at sensory points such as touch, pain, warmth, and cold." It’s a bit different from the five senses. I would like you to experience not a direct action, but rather an experience in which you are impressed and connected and your skin sensation moves.
——It may feel close to the instinctive part of the heart. How long have you been aware of that?
I think I'm conscious of art from the beginning. I'm attracted to what I think is comfortable or scary, but it's something attractive. The ribbon art began with the image of a flock of butterflies sticking to the tree. Some people say, "I feel comfortable and I can't see it," and others say, "It's beautiful." It's interesting to see both extremes in such a way, so I hope that you can receive it in each person's sense. You can think of it as “beautiful” or “beautiful.” In that way, I like to become more multifaceted.

I'm impressed by the energy of the land and people.
If you find time, go to Tohoku, you don't know yet.
——The ribbon also has a fancy charm. If you could use magic now, what kind of power would you want?
Move the moment! It's nice to have such magic that you can come to Sendai in a second from home. I like the Tohoku Shinkansen, so it's hard to throw it away, but recently I'm interested in traveling, so it's nice to go to various places in Tohoku instantly.

——Have you had a moment when your heart was moved recently?
Morioka Sansa Odori Festival in Iwate. People in Iwate really like it, right? I've seen Tono's deer dance or Kuji Autumn Festival in Iwate, but I never saw Sansa Odori Festival. A lot of people walk while dancing, blocking the four lanes, but the employees of the company, the children of college students, the unions and organizations that inherit the traditional dance of the city - it's really cool to dance. It was a masterpiece that a large number of people proceeded by blocking the road, and it was a masterpiece. Until then, I was watching the live distribution while talking to people around me, saying, "I know this, but I've never seen it live, so I want to see it." That's finally come true. However, I was looking forward to seeing "Miss Sansa Odori Festival" which I found in the distribution, but since the back of my seat was a pond and a forest, I bought an insect repellent spray saying "I'll be bitten by a lot of mosquitoes!" Then the person who pushed passed by (laughs). So next time, I would like to visit again so that I can see him.
